Frequently Asked Questions
What file formats does Markino support?
Markino can open and edit Markdown (.md, .markdown) and plain text (.txt) files. It can also import PDF files, converting them to editable markdown. For export, Markino supports HTML, PDF, Markdown, and plain text formats.
Why won't my PDF convert properly?
Markino uses text extraction to convert PDFs to markdown. This works well for text-based PDFs, but has limitations: 1) Scanned or image-based PDFs cannot be converted (OCR is not supported), 2) Complex layouts may not preserve structure perfectly, 3) Very large PDFs may be truncated to prevent performance issues. If you see a message about the PDF being scanned, you'll need to use a dedicated OCR tool first.
Does Markino support GitHub Flavored Markdown?
Yes! Markino fully supports GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), including tables, task lists, strikethrough, and fenced code blocks with syntax highlighting.
Can I use LaTeX math equations?
Yes! Markino renders LaTeX math using KaTeX. Use $...$ for inline math and $$...$$ for display math blocks. The live preview shows rendered equations in real-time.
How do I change the appearance?
Go to Markino → Settings (or press Cmd+,). You can choose between Light, Dark, or System appearance, and adjust the preview styling.
Does Markino sync across devices?
Markino stores files locally on your Mac. To sync across devices, save your documents to iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or another cloud storage folder. Changes will sync automatically through those services.
How do I export to PDF?
Go to File → Export → PDF (or use the keyboard shortcut). Choose where to save the file. The PDF will be generated with proper formatting, including syntax-highlighted code blocks and rendered math equations.
Why does the app check for updates?
Markino uses Sparkle to check for new versions. This helps you stay up to date with bug fixes and new features. Updates are optional - you'll see a notification when one is available and can choose whether to install it. You can manually check for updates from Settings.
Is Markino free?
Yes! Markino is completely free to use. There are no subscriptions, no ads, and no in-app purchases. It's a passion project from Mallard Foundries.
What data does Markino collect?
Markino collects anonymous usage counts (app launches, documents opened by type, exports by format) to help us improve the app. No document content, file names, or personal information is ever collected. Crash reports are sent only when the app crashes. See our Privacy Policy for details.
